PG Wodehouse Commemorated in Huy

Yesterday, on 6 September 2025, the Drones Club of Belgium donated two new commemorative plaques to the museum of the Fort of Huy, where PG Wodehouse was interned from 3 August to 12 September 1940, along with 631 other British citizens, before they were transported to their internment camp in Tost. Because our old plaque, placed in the fort in 2000 in the company of Drones, descendants of PG and local dignitaries, was first and foremost worn out by the weather and in need of replacement, a new Donation  was necessary. It was also important to correct an old mistake: the original text made no mention of the other British citizens who were imprisoned in this “sinister fortress”.

The replacement for the original plaque, also made of stone, was presented to the Huy municipal council and the museum management during a ceremony at the town hall, together with a plaque intended for the interior of the castle with more information. In addition to members of the Drones Club of Belgium, our colleagues from the Dutch club were also present, together with representatives of local associations and, last but not least, some descendants of the British who were imprisoned here with PG Wodehouse. On the occasion of the presentation, visitors were given a lecture on the vicissitudes of PG Wodehouse during the war and a description of the internment of the 632 British citizens in 1940.

In a subsequent blog, we will elaborate on this important period in Wodehouse’s life, and show you some unique material.
